The Wrath of Bagyong Isang
Monday, July 20, 2009
Bagyong Isang wrecked havoc in greater Manila area despite of its concentration in Northern Luzon area. Some Marikina populace were displaced due to overflowing river. One boy was reported to have drowned in San Mateo, Rizal when it was carried away by strong current.
We were not an exemption here in Makati. Our malunggay tree had fallen down. That's the photo below.
After the typhoon, our landlord climb up to the roof top to bring down the fallen tree.

Blue Skies, Performance Bike, and a Pillion Passenger: A Phonecam Photo Essay
Wednesday, March 4, 2009
After that disastrous incident of which our company hired a male assistant for me who is lazy, a drunkard, irresponsible and messed up all my work while I was away for my wedding vacation, now I'm blessed with a female aide who is responsible, work-oriented, obedient, quick-learner, with initiative, no vices, and cute. She just replaced the first guy who was fired out due to poor performance, insubordination, tardiness, and misbehavior.
Right this time while roaming around the metro, I'm training my new apprentice and she easily learned about her new work. She unburden an ample amount of my workload. I'm hoping to work with her smoothly from the second quarter of the year and onwards.
During our trips, I had taken a few "drive and snap" photos using my Sony Ericsson K750i mobile phone camera. During the last few days of February, the sky is getting clearer, an indication of the approaching summer.
Summer Blue Skies
Manila City Hall. This photo was also posted in my
last
entry.

SM Southmall empty parking area. Photographed using my aide's Sony Ericsson
W200i mobile phone.

SLEX C5 toll exit. Photographed while we were queued at the payment booth.
SM Fairview
Last weekend, we went to SM Fairview to observe their 3-day Sale. At the car park area, my assistant saw giant balloons. She suddenly got an idea to be photographed with those huge balloons so she could show it to her kids who like balloons so much.

The pillion passenger-turned-phonecam model posed for a few shots with those
balloons in the background.

SM Fairview's motorcycle parking area - probably the biggest motorcycle parking
space among SM malls.

Junard
Monday, February 23, 2009
Junard is a crew of Superferry 19 whom I and my wife befriended while onboard the ship on our way back to Manila. He's a very nice kid and we took him a few shots.
As for my North Cotabato Adventure series, I will resume posting once I can unburden a few of my workload. You may always go back here (http://travelogue.digitalrebel.ws/northcotabato/) to see previous entries.

He's probably drunk and couldn't make it home. Saw this while waiting for bus along Boni Serrano and EDSA near Camp Crame. Exactly a year ago, this was photographed using my phonecam which was stolen 62 days later.

Doesn't look like Jollibee, isn't it?
Anybody familiar of the place?
Photographed using Sony Ericsson K750i. Way back, nobody believe this was taken using a mobile phone camera. What about you?

Photo Essay: Manila Ocean Park
Monday, March 17, 2008
"Discover the marine world's vast resources. Enjoy the fun-filled learning experience." That's what the place promised or so as seen printed on a large tarp fixed across Manila Ocean Park building. I cannot attest how true the claim is as I didn't get inside when we went there last Saturday, March 15. I had all the reasons why I didn't get inside to witness their spectacle despite of the marketing hype I read from the newspaper about the place and the promotional materials I happened to read at True World Travel and Tours. The following photographs were taken using Asus mobile phone camera.

The big tarp with Pres. GMA's photo into it.

Ticket prices.

Mural.

The lobby of Manila Ocean Park.

There are also clowns to entertain Manila Ocean Park's visitor.

There were long queue of visitors at the ticket lane.

Judging from the outside, I can see that the complex is still far from complete.
Of when it will be completed, I don't have any idea yet. I got a copy of
ocenarium map from my friends but didn't get sufficient information that I
wanted. Surfing the internet, I come across with the park's website,
http://oceanparkmanilabay.com/, and
an online article from Inquirer's
Manila Ocean Park to Open in December.
Harbor View, Parking Area
I also got several photos from around the place, the Harbor View and the Parking Area.

Of Cars and Jeepneys
Friday, March 14, 2008
I had just found this series of vintage car and a jeepney photos in my digital archive. Then, I was not happy with the result because of the severe overexposure - typical to photographs taken using a VGA phonecam. Photos were taken when the vintage cars were on exhibit at the Quezon City Hall last January 9, 2006. The photo of the jeepney was taken later of the same day in Brgy. Pag-asa, Quezon City.
Manuel L. Quezon Presidential Car

1937 Chrysler Airflow Limousine was the official car of Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon. The car was restored for 18 months with Dan Irish, a noted vintage and a car collector having been responsible for having it back to its original state.
Gen. Douglas MacArthurs' Car

This 1937 Cabriolet, especially built by General Motors of America for Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, arrived in the Philippines on November 4, 1937. In 1938, it was turned over to Gen. Douglas MacArthur who used it all throughout his tour of duty in the country.
Philippine Jeepney
Post-war Era to present

Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. They were originally made from US military jeeps left over from World War II and are well known for their flamboyant decoration and crowded seating. They have also become a symbol of Philippine culture. More information about Jeepney in Wikipedia.

Test Post - Manila Harbour Square

Kodak Z700 / Shutter Speed: 4 sec / F-stop: f/3.4 / ISO Setting: 80 / focal
length: 8.6mm / flash: off
/ mount: tripod (Jan. 27, 2006 8:05pm)

Kodak Z700 / Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec / F-stop: f/2.8 / ISO Setting: 80 / focal length: 6mm
/ flash: fired / mount: tripod (Jan. 27, 2006 8:05pm)
T he two photos above actually has no direct references to the title and main content of this entry. Other than reminiscing what was a very interesting and delightful eyeball with MIP members two years ago, I also used these two photos (that, I thankfully found in my archive) for a test post in my new website layout. If you're a frequent visitor of this site, you would notice that I just had undergone a new facelift - this website, that is. From a revised pre-made template that had been my website layout since the dawn of 2004, I had to go through all the pain in designing a layout I can claim my own design - with a fresh hand-coded HTML. It's not that I'm not happy anymore with my previous layout. NO, it's not. In fact, I came to love such layout so deeply as it already became this website's "personality." It was also my design preference, the reason I had to choose and keep it for quite a long time. My idea of redesigning the layout for this website came about when I heard complaints from friends from outside the country who told me they can't view my website. Though there were no details given, I realized there must be something wrong with my layout when being displayed from "outside computer." It was confirmed by a friend based in Korea who told me my website is not loading in her browser. She's using Internet Explorer. I didn't know about it. I'm using Mozilla Firefox. To check it out, I used the Internet Explorer installed in my laptop computer to view my website. It loaded successfully but sluggish. In our office, all the terminals are using Internet Explorer version 7, so I also checked my website from there. The website was loaded successfully in all workstations, but considerably slower as loaded from my laptop using Mozilla Firefox. As if it was not enough, I visited three Internet cafes when I was off from the office. The Internet cafes I visited were using the lower version of Internet Explorer, must probably the same version of Internet Explorer as my friends. To my horror, all three Internet cafes confirmed that my website cannot be viewed with Internet Explorer. When I loaded this website, I was only seeing the header and the yellow background. I could see that a table was partially laid in the screen, so I waited for five minutes. But there was none. In the status bar a "Done" was showing telling me loading of the webpage is done. But it was not. I viewed the source code to check. The source code was not completely downloaded as well. I tried "Refresh" but to no avail. Two more computers confirmed to me the same thing. Pareng Dennis must be right. He also told me in one occassion that my website was loading very slowly in his computer.
That night when I went home, I was really bothered for what I had discovered. I never realized all along, I was using a very unfriendly website layout. While I might say I'm not really an Internet junkie (not just yet), but since I'm sharing my travels, photos, and intimate stories all over the Internet, it isn't just right if only Firefox users can see and feast those postings while others would just be staring with a yellow background. It's just unfair. Everybody should have access to my website. I'm not blaming Dan, the one who made that template. He's a professional web designer and the layout was very good in the beginning. The culprit was simply me. The template underwent so much makeover that it was totally ripped out of its originality (but templates are intended for that purpose, aren't they?).
I was getting busy in the opening of the year 2008 that I wasn't able to update the site with new contents. But I was more concern of any drastic measure that can be done to solve my dilemma. At first, I was considering of cleaning up the source code of the layout, going back to the very basic. But I realized I also fancied a three-column webpage just lately. I was also thinking a black webpage is more appropriate to showcase my photos. Finally, I decided it's time to let go of the old layout and embrace a newer three-column web design. And off I started hand-coding while being conservative about unnecessary spaces, line breaks and hard carriage returns in the source code. The new design costed me three sleepless nights. But I know it was well worth it. There were few minor changes during the testing process. The new design didn't behave well during online display but was addressed to very shortly. When I was already about to implement the new design to my website, I realized it would surely contradict to my previous blog entries. Earlier blog entries were published with independent HTML tags. Those entries surely wouldn't get along with the new layout as compared to this entry. While it may be possible to edit those old entries to conform to the new layout, I think I surely wouldn't do it. I'm just a plain and simple travel photography enthusiast who is having a little time for myself and I wouldn't allow retroactive modification of those old blog entries to compete its share of time with my girlfriend. And my solution is very simple: I won't effect the new layout to entries that were published earlier.
AS far as the HTML hand-coding is concerned, the new design was being worked out to be thoroughly clean as possible as I can make it. But as for the external appearance, I must say the sidebar to the left is still not appealing for my taste. The template was being worked out carefully but hastily, as if I was getting paid for a deadline. Anyhow, it is easier to change such sidebar with a Photoshop to whip. Also, Google Ads to the left and right (both opposite column, top) maybe eyesores, but at least the new design marked a noticeable faster download time as compared to the previous layout. Stat widgets and other bling-bling that occupied most space in the sidebar of the old layout were reassigned to a separate page, the Link page. See my previous layout here for reference.
Comparatively, the old layout is sized to 80kb as compared to the 28kb new one. So, now, you're seeing the external part - I mean, for what you can see now in your computer monitor. Let's see how I worked with the source code.
The source code
I'm sharing you here the HTML source code of the new design.

For the new layout, I avoided true links within the domain so I can minimize the characters to be used. That way, I won't pile up "unnecessary" characters in the source code.
Even for every blog entries I'm writing and will be written in the future, I see to it I only used minimal HTML tags, so I'm now using a "post template" that is to be controlled by style cascading style sheet. I see to it everything then should conform with the new layout. Please see example below:
<h2>Jet Airways launches Interactive Voice Response based Payment and Ticketing Service</h2> <p><a href="http://www.asiatraveltips.com/news07/171-JetAirways.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.asiatraveltips.com/news07/171-JetAirways.shtml</a></p> <p class="introduction"><span class="first-letter">A</span>s part of a customer relationship development programme, India's Jet Airways, has launched an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) based payment and ticketing service. <p>This innovative service has been launched through Jet Airways 24x7 call centres wherein customers can now book and pay for their E-Tickets over an exclusively customized and secure IVR system. This latest service will allow customers to complete their reservation with their credit cards through a secure gateway and instantly receive their E-tickets via email, subject to certain terms and conditions. <span class="fullpost"> <p>Owing to its self driven features, the IVR system is capable of handling customers credit card details and processing independently. On confirmation by the customer, the call is transferred to the IVR system, following which the customer has to enter credit card details. Once the verification is complete, the customer will get an automated response and the e-ticket is issued accordingly. <p>Information exchanged through the IVR system is treated securely and protected by Verisign and Thawte, by using the internationally accepted and industry standard powerful encryption technology. To further enhance credit card data security, credit card details are masked in the PNR / reservation record and are not accessible to the call centre staff. <p>The IVR system is capable of handling multiple passengers and multiple sectors which can be booked in a single PNR. In the first phase, INR or US$ equivalent INR fares can be booked and ticketed through the IVR system and will be available for all E-ticket eligible sectors within India. This service will be extended for other fares and international sectors in a phased manner and will also allow ticket delivery on cash payment in the future. <p>Booking and payment through IVR can be made up to two hours prior to the departure time of a flight and ticketing can be done for bookings made at Jet Airways offices in India only. Bookings done by travel agents cannot be used for IVR ticketing. <p>Tickets purchased through the IVR system can be cancelled and refunded through the call centre. Customers will have to visit the nearest Jet Airways office for any changes that require part refund or additional collections. <p>As part of another e-ticketing initiative, Jet Airways has also introduced an innovative “Pay Online” service whereby the service allows the passengers to pay for and issue e-ticket against an already created booking. The “Pay Online” service is offered to passengers holding a valid booking created at Jet Airways offices across India only. Transactions can be done in INR equivalent of US$ and this service is also open to passengers wishing to pay online using their credit card. The eligibility criteria and exceptions are similar to those of IVR ticketing. <p>The IVR payment and ticketing service is available for customers calling the following numbers in India:<br /> 022 39893333 - Mumbai<br /> 011 39893333 - Delhi<br /> 080 39893333 - Bangalore<br /> 040 39893333 - Hyderabad<br /> 044 39893333 - Chennai<br /> 033 39893333 - Kolkata<br /> <p><font color=red>See other recent news regarding</font>: <a target=_blank href=http://www.asiatraveltips.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl?Terms=Airlines>Airlines</a>, <a target=_blank href=http://www.asiatraveltips.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl?Terms=%22Jet+Airways%22>Jet Airways</a> <br clear="all" /> <div align="right"><a href="http://getfirefox.com/" title="Get Firefox - Take Back the Web"><img src="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/buttons/getfirefox_large.png" border="0" alt="Get Firefox" /></a></div> </span>
Redesigning a website is a very tedious task. At any rate, mine is almost complete, and this blog entry will confirm whether there are still coding glitches that need to be corrected. Custom web site template is not a joke to get started with. But for those who wanted it easier, there are always free web templates proliferating over the Internet extended by those generous web designers. As for me, a DYI web template is worth the challenge. And this black, three-column template you're seeing now surely will have to stay here a little longer.
Update: June 27, 2009 3:35pm
I'm now able to convert my template from table to div using CSS. I'm still in the process of reassigning widgets. Stay tune for more updates.

Ysabella's Heirloom Chicken Recipe
Tuesday, January 8, 2008
Finally, I had tasted and enjoyed the chicken dish featured in the ABS-CBN
teleserye of Judy Ann Santos. This was photographed and eaten at Bacolod
Inasal in Metrowalk, Brgy. Ugong in Pasig City. Then I was finishing the
draft of my article entitled
The MIP Christmas Party 2007 so I was looking for a place I can call my own - where I'd be
virtually out of reach for unnecessary phone calls. Unfortunately for me, I
was literally unreachable 15 days later when the phone I used to take this photo was
stolen while I was riding on a commuter bus.
I'm still unreachable up to the point I'm posting this entry.

Eden & Leslie
Monday, January 7, 2008
This photo simply illustrates how strong is the tie of Filipino friendship regardless of having been disassociated for quite a long years.
I've known Eden and Leslie (in yellow) in Cagayan de Oro way back in the earlier days. I was on a missionary works and they were graduating medical students then.
I last met them sometime in 1996 in Manila while they were doing their medical review, of which, after that, they ventured for an employment outside the country.
We lost communication after that, as communication during those days are not so high-tech as compared at this present time. I got my first email account at Hotmail in the midst of 1996 but only quite a small percentage of Filipinos then were aware of such communication technology.
In the last week of December 2005, Leslie contacted me. She just came home to Cebu for a Christmas vacation. She got my mobile phone number from Eden, who, surprisingly, is also already in the country, and happened to got my number while surfing the web.
On January 6, 2006, Leslie came to Manila and together with Eden, who is already in Manila for few months, have agreed to meet at SM North EDSA which is quite accessible to both parties.
When we met, I was surprised to see they don't look that way as how they looked before. They are no longer that cute as what I expected of them. Look what ten years can do to all of us... They also made me realized that I also look much older now after that ten long years.
I brought them to a cheaper yet fine dining cuisine in Timog Avenue where we can have a private moments together and spend hours for a looooong chat.
In the midnight, I sent them to Sta. Mesa where they temporarily stay. We exchanged contact numbers and promised we could never loose communication - not anymore...
Both of them left again again to two separate countries in the second week of January 2006 and in the first week of February of 2006 respectively, exactly two years as of this writing. I wonder when can we see each other again.
================================
This photo was taken exactly two years ago, a January 7, 2006. I was using a KodakZ700 mounted on a newly-bought King tripod (yes, it pays to always bringing your tripod in the car)
Set on a self-timer, a red-eye reduction flash is being used.

Test Post
Wednesday, October 10, 2007

I had just found out this morning
that my site exceeded its 1GB 10GB monthly bandwidth limit. I know it is because of
the photos of my Duenas Visit 2007 that I had hosted into this

website. I might be reconsidering transferring those photos to my
Multiply site,
and that will include photos from the remaining three parts of the
Duenas Visit series.
I had the problem addressed shortly and that is my test post down below. Please give your comment. I'd surely appreciate those...

Bagyong Egay Update
Wednesday, August 15, 2007
Typhoon Egay is just getting near Cagayan Valley yet it's effect can be felt even here in the Metro Manila area. Flash floods hit several parts of Metro Manila since this morning and the situation seems to be getting worse. The rains are getting stronger.
Vehicular flow at the Cubao underpass was badly hampered by floods. Several passengers were forced to get off the coaches and walked the sometimes knee-deep water. This morning, I even witnessed waist-deep water in the interiors of Mandaluyong and traffic was re-routed. I was stuck in a bumper-to-bumper traffic at 8:30am to 10am from Shaw Blvd. Mandaluyong to Shaw Blvd. Pasig.
Low to zero visibility also hounded many motorists in areas where rain was heavy. The photo below was taken while I was driving along southbound EDSA on a lunch time.

Leon Apacible Historical Landmark
Monday, April 9, 2007
Stuck in a friend's house in Cavite City since Maundy Thursday and suffering from an unstable PLDT DSL internet connection since I arrived here until last night, I was toying my laptop and found this photo at random inside my 2.25 in. external hard drive. I just don't have anything to publish (blog) about and I still felt like publishing (blogging). The photo was taken last October 7, 2006 during the MIP Taal Photoshoot.
Happy Easter Sunday, everyone!

Guimaras Cross
Thursday, April 5, 2007
this is the huge cross at the Balaang Bukid in Guimaras Island, a pilgrimage site of the Catholics. Getting a better point of view for this photograph alone was very challenging. It was already the peak of the mountain and you can't move a little more. I was using a normal zoom lens then. Or there could also be a better point of view but then, with thousand of people here and there, that location could have already been occupied by pilgrims.
Balaang Bukid is a Hiligaynon term for Divine Mountain or Holy Mountain.
This was taken a Good Friday, April 18, 2003 (the same day as of this posting), closer to four years ago.
Film Used: Kodak Gold 100 with Canon EOS 750QD
A short description about the place can also be read from this link: http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cove/2342/iloilo_city.htm:
Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras. Held every Good Friday. Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras, a Lenten presentation in Jordan, Guimaras Island, is fast finding a place for itself among the top tourist drawers for Iloilo province during the Holy Week. This annual affair has attracted thousands of local devotees, foreign and domestic tourists. They flock to the island to witness the celebration. The trip is climaxed by a visit to Balaan Bukid (Holy Mountain) which with a chapel and huge cross. It is a pilgrimage site of the Catholics. Ang Pagtaltal, similar to the worlds famous Passion Play presented every 10 years in Oberammergau in South Bavaria, Germany, is an experience that draws one to what is folkloric in the native sense without neglecting the thought that the faith for which it is celebrated is universal in dimension. The reenactment Ang Pagtaltal with the Filipino context of culture and tradition is a blending of faith and folklore.

By the way, I'm starting to repost some of my old photos that I had recovered from my old site (http://ww1.i8.com) which was taken by the webhost without my knowing...

An informal mode of transport most common to be seen in Region II. It is a vehicle comprising of a two-wheeled trailer pulled by a hand-tractor.
The Land Transportation Office said there is no need to register the vehicle since it has no serial number and its purpose is not only for transportation.
Yet Safety features of these modes do not conform to existing laws and regulations and they usually pose dangers to national highways especially during night time and early in the morning when the time is still dark.
Photographed on January 21, 2007 in San Gabriel, La Union using Sony Ericsson K750i.

"Leaving On A Jet Plane"
I'm ... I'm ...
All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go
I'm ...
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I'll tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time, oh, let me kiss you
And close your eyes and I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times that I won't have to say ...
Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go
And I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

Metropolitan Theater
Thursday, January 4, 2007
It's actually a part (back) of the Metropolitan Theater. "Completed in 1935, to the design of eminent Filipino architect Juan Arellano, this supreme example of art deco architecture was once Manila's focal venue for performances ranging from vaudeville to opera. It fell into disuse in the 1960s, was meticulously restored in the following decade, but has once again fallen into disrepair. But even in the building's present state, it is still possible to admire such art deco gems as the bronze statues of female figures placed along the top of the facade."
Excerpt from the modern historian and walking encyclopedia Denz Dayao.

Just another femme fatale?
Tuesday, June 20, 2006
I saw this lady motorcyclist in Antipolo proper yesterday swiftly squeezing through traffic with ease. It was amazing how she handled her motorcyle more than average men can do. I became curious whether she is really a woman or not, so I tried following her for a few more blocks until we reached to an intersection manned by a traffic police. I squeezed into her right side when we were halted for a stop and when I got the right angle, I playfully snapped a photo of her using my phone camera. Just then, I noticed my right front tire suddenly deflated. When I got off to check, I saw that the tire was pierced by a junked steel bar. Sad I didn't know why I didn't see those construction debris in the first place, scattered just over the shouldering. It was crazy. I had to remove my barong tagalog and had to changed tire under the heat of the high noon sun. As a result, I wasn't able to catch up my lunch on time.
I brought the tire to the vulcanizing shop this morning and the repair man told me the tire is already unusable (tubeless punctured with big holes can no longer be fixed). Tsk, tsk, tsk, I end up buying two pieces of tire this afternoon...
Extraordinary women are simply dangerous...
