Misa de Gallo

Thursday, February 18, 2010

This post is a continuation of my North Cotabato adventure series which is momentarily discontinued on February 2009. The last post to where we pick up is Filipino Ingenuity. This entry is a long overdue post but nevertheless, I have to post it in the spirit of continuing this series.

December 16, 2008 - Balindog, Kidapawan. We rise up early in the morning. It is the first morning for Misa de Gallo, a nine-day ritual of Simbang Gabi that would end up on Christmas Eve.

One of the customs related to the Philippine Misa de Gallo is the selling of traditional Philippine food, such as puto bumbong (a purple colored rice pastry, seasoned with grated--coconut and brown sugar), tsokolate (a hot chocolate drink), bibingka (flour and egg cakes cooked on top and under), and salabat, or ginger tea, which are sold by vendors to the faithful outside churches.

Goods are usually sold out even before the sun rises.
