Angels and Demons: Book vs. Film

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

My wife and I finally made it for our first movie date for this year. Last Sunday, we watched the movie Angels and Demons, the movie adaptation of Dan Brown's novel of the same title. While there was not much hype about the movie, I was really excited to watch this  so as to see how the movie creators were able to put into action what I had read from the book. My wife didn't read the novel yet so the movie isn't that a big deal for her.

While the opening of the movie is that of the death of the Pope in the Vatican City, we were then brought to CERN research facility in Geneva, Switzerland where a physicist succeded in creating the antimatter.

In the next scene, we were presented with the main character, Harvard scholar Robert Langdon being summoned to Vatican by a Vatican City Police to investigate a long-extinct secret society called the Illuminati. A murder of a physicist at CERN research facility had just taken place and the disappearance  of four Preferiti (cardinals who would likely to succeed the Pope), all of these incident pointed to the said secret society as responsible of doing such.

Robert Langdon also discovered that the antimatter is being stolen by the Illuminati and hidden somewhere within the Vatican City to threaten and blackmail the Roman Catholic Church.

Robert Langdon is partnered with Vittoria Vetra, the beautiful Italian daughter of the murdered physicist. Together, they set off on a wild hunt through antique cathedrals, perilous catacombs, ancient crypts, and even the most sacred vault in the world, in an attempt to decipher markers and codes which could possibly be the Vatican's last hope of survival.

A lot of movie-goers flocked to watch Angels and Demons

If you've read the novel before watching this movie, it becomes apparent that major changes were being done to streamline the plot of the story in the film. In the novel, the plot is so complex and a lot of twists are present elements in the story. I would like here to point out some points that deviated from the book. This is not a complete list, however.

Book Film
The novel is a prequel to the Da Vinci Code. The film is placed as a sequel to the first movie, the Da Vinci Code.
The murdered physicist in the book is named Leonardo Vetra. The murdered physicist in the film is named Silvano Bentivoglio.
In the book, the name of  Camerlengo is Carlo Ventresca. In the film adaptation, the Camerlengo's name is Patrick McKenna.
Vittoria Vetra is being pictured in the story as wearing shorts since she was coming from the field for a scientific studies. Vittoria Vetra is seen in the film in a more decent outfit. (I personally would love to see her character in the film wearing as what is being pictured in the book).
The killer is of Middle Eastern origin and displays his sadistic lust for women throughout the novel. The killer is more professional and less violent.
Cardinal Baggia, the fourth Preferiti, was drowned in the story. Cardinal Baggia survived and was elected as the new Pontiff.
Langdon is engaged in a near-fatal encounter with the killer a few times in the story. Langdon here is more of a thinker than doing the action.
CERN director Maximilian Kohler confronted the Camerlengo after his evil acts has been uncovered. Commander Olivetti, the Swiss Guard commander, confronted the Camerlengo about his evil acts. The character of Maximilian Kohler has been eliminated.

As previously stated, the list above does not complete all the changes and the differences between the book and the film. However, what is notable is how the film kept the character of Camerlengo young and enigmatic as charaterized from the book. The character is portrayed in the film by Ewan McGregor and I'm pretty sure the role fits well with him. Another notable is the keeping of the character Lieutenant Chartrand, portrayed as a young Swiss Guard both in the book and in the film.

A more detailed summary of the film can be read in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_&_Demons_(film)#Plot. Swapping Incident

I went to SM Fairview last Thursday to do my usual rounds of shop visitations. I had to pass through SM's RDU (the delivery area) since I was bringing with me stocks to be delivered. I surrendered my driver's license at the guard on duty in exchange of an entrance pass. It was already past twelve noon time.

I finished my business at around one o'clock and exited through the same delivery entrance I passed through. I returned to the guard on duty my entrance pass and asked for my driver's license. At first, my driver's license simply cannot be found. The guard search it from everywhere he could possibly find it but there was none. I had to wait several minutes for my driver's license. Later, it turned out that another driver got my driver's license instead. An unclaimed driver's license was found corresponding to the entrance pass that I had just surrendered.

I asked the security guard to report the matter to SM's Customer Relations Service (CRS Office) before I would go there to report it myself. I went to their office too and filed my own statement about the incident. All of the CRS officers were very apologetic due to what had happened. We had agreed that I'll wait for the driver who got my driver's license to return it back to the security guard.

I was virtually tied up to the situation. I supposed to be going to our Alimall and Harrison Plaza branch but since I no longer have with me my driver's license, I can no longer driver going to these places least I'd risk myself to be put to prison for driving without drivers license.

Night time came and the driver who got my driver's license did not return. Fortunately, some of the guard recognized the driver who happened to be working in a supplier of one of SM tenant in the foodcourt. The security guard involoved in the swapping of my driver's license decided to follow the address of the driver written in the driver's license. In the absence of my driver's license, I could no longer drive my car back home. So, I decided that I'd park the car in SM's secured area and they agreed. I also gave CRS Office 24 hours to produce my drivers license in any way they can do. The officers promise they would assist me and assured me that they will work double time if needed be so I can have my driver's license back. They too put pressure on the security guard who lost my license to really find it for me.

Friday morning, the security guard contacted me telling the driver is no longer living in the address indicated in his driver's license. He was still trying to find ways how to contact the driver who got my driver's license.

Lunch time, I was already back in the CRS Office. They decided that I'll get an affidavit of loss so I can apply for a duplicate license at the LTO if my driver's license can never be found on that day. Accompanied by one SM security guard, we went to see a lawyer so I can file an affidavit of loss. They paid it for me. After that, we went back to the CRS office. We were actually ready to go to the LTO office. We were just waiting for a police officer that would facilitate the quickest way of my acquiring a duplicate license. It's Friday and there's a big possibility that I won't be able to finish it within the day. Meanwhile, the security guard who was tracing the delivery driver who got my driver's license called me up and informed me that he already got my driver's license back. He also was able to returned to that delivery driver his own driver's license. I already wasted two days just because of my driver's license mess, yet I decided to wait for the security guard to report back to the CRS office.

It was already night time when he arrived. True to his word, he got my driver's license back. My driver's license got a few scratches in the surface but I was still grateful that I finally had it back. The guard and everybody right there in the office apologized for the mess. They were also thankful that despite of the incident, I didn't freak out but instead patiently waited for the problem to be resolved. The security agency's big boss arrived and talked to me. He assured me that the guard who messed up with my driver's license will face an appropriate administrative sanction. Deep inside of  me, I feel pity of the security guard. He's a nice kid and did not committed his mistake intentionally. But I didn't give any comment. Security is accuracy. There should be no room for errors. Everything's up for the big boss to decide. I was just hoping the punishment would not be severe...

Recently my wife and I enjoyed our first movie date, without the kids in 5 years! We saw Star Trek, which I thoroughly enjoyed and my wife, who is not a trekker like me, wants to see the original tv series! Asawa ko is a dedicated Catholic so it surprises me that she has some interest in the original Da Vinci Code. I wonder how your wife contemplates such a movie with religious contradictions?

That was a horrible experience! No, not the movie, i meant the swapping incident. :)
I'm glad it got sorted out in the end. At the end of the day, the security guards are expected to do their jobs right, or else terrible things happen. Sometimes much much worse than a swapping incident such as this.

@ Francesca: Yes, the story is just a work of fiction.

Nakakainis nga rin yung driver eh. Sobrang katangahan. Hindi man lang tinitingnan kung talaga bang lisensiya ba niya ang nakukuha niya...

We watched the movie this week. It was good. I'm sure, if I read the book first, I would have found the movie not meeting up to some expectations. That's what I notice with most movie adaptions. It's like the Harry Potter movies, I did enjoy them in the big screen, pero the books did something else---they transported me to where Harry Potter is.

Nice to hear you had a nice movie date with your wife... really want to see that movie... hope I find the time...

What an adventure with your driver license... very unfortunate... and yes...hope the sanction was not too bad for the security guard... he didn't do it intentionally and it seems he dis the impossible to recover your driver license.
