Software Issues: I'm Now 50% Guilt-Free
Saturday, March 29, 2008
Note: The following is not an advertisement post. Please read on...
I'm guilty of software piracy - that is! I'm not a hypocrite, but I swear I was never happier patronizing illegally acquired softwares. But what can I do? Legitimate softwares from commerical software vendors are getting so expensive a mere computer enthusiast like me cannot afford to pay for the licensing fee.
When I got my first laptop in 1998, I was using an OEM Windows 98SE operating system that came with a few bundled software. Then, I was using .major softwares with corporate licenses, i.e. MS Office 95, CorelDRAW 5.0, Adobe Photoshop 4.0. For webpage layout and design, I was using Frontpage Express (came packaged with the operating system) but shifted to Netscape Composer (a free software) when I got hand-coding problem with the former. The idealistic me see to it that I could not violate copyright rules and intellectual property rights. In fact, I can still remember that when Winamp (a media player) was still charging $10 for their downloadable program, I obliged to pay despite of the fact their software is fully functional whether you pay for it or not. Then, my first credit card, a FarEast Card, cannot be used to pay overseas transaction, so I asked a friend based in the US to pay for the Winamp program in my behalf. Then, that was how compliant I was.
Things changed in the year 2000. Softwares were getting outdated and another licensing payment were required for product upgrade. The NGO to where I connected and make use of their licensed software couldn't afford to pay for the upgrade. It was decided that they stick to old programs.
When I worked in an ISP, I upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional Edition. It costed me so much - not only a hole in my pocket but a break-up with my live-in partner as well. And since I was no longer connected to the NGO who owned the corporate license of the software I was using, I also gave up using them. With no option to boot, I bought a pirated copy of Microsoft XP Office with Frontpage, CorelDRAW 9, and Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and installed all of these in my laptop computer. While these softwares were illegal copies, I also got the chance for myself to learn new curves and features not available with the outdated counterparts.
Fast forward to the present time, I'm still using the same Windows 2000 Professional Edition as my operating system though I had already replaced my old Toshiba laptop with a Neo brand. The monitor of my old and trusted laptop computer gave way sometime in June 2006, that forced me to replaced it with a new one in just only a matter of two weeks. Except for the pirated Microsoft XP Office with Frontpage, I also had upgraded my pirated CorelDRAW with another pirated CorelDRAW which is version 12. I also had upgraded my pirated Adobe Photoshop 7.0 to another pirated copy - Adobe Photoshop CS2. The reason I didn't upgrade my MS Office is because of the Frontpage packaged with it. I used it for web design. Later release of Microsoft Office does not come with Frontpage.
I did buy a licensed Windows XP Home Edition so I can upgrade my operating sytem. What I didn't realize is that Windows XP Home Edition won't install/upgrade over Windows 2000 Professional Edition. A clean install is necessary in which I wouldn't want to do it. Other than the major softwares that I had mentioned here, I have had a lot of softwares installed in my computer. I wouldn't want to undergo the pain of reinstalling the whole thing. Anyhow, I still consider Windows 200 Professional Edition to be superior/stable compared to the eye-candy Windows XP Home Edition.
HTML Editors
A few weeks back, I downloaded a few free programs that I had came across over the Internet. My purpose for downloading such programs is to check whether it could possibly replace some of my present softwares. For webpage design, I downloaded three program, i.e. HTML Editor 1.6.0.61, Alleycode, and PageBreeze Free HTML Editor 4.0b. While these programs are free, they are fully-functional. HTML Editor holds true to its generic name. It is a Notepad-style HTML editor. Alleycode is a highly productive HTML editor that I used in the revision of this site's template . PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is a powerful HTML editor that possesses both WYSIWYG and HTML preview modes. I had been using this program lately for minor cosmetics modification of the sites that I maintained and it went without flaws. I get used to Microsoft Frontpage, and it probably has more functionality than PageBreeze Free HTML Editor, but who wouldn't want to use a guilt-free (read: free) software over a heavy-duty but pirated software copy? Two weeks ago, I removed MS Frontpage as a component of my MS Office XP program. Needless to say, I had Frontpage permanently get ridden out from my system.
Office Program
I also had downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.4. It is an
open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets,
presentations, graphics, databases and more. It stores all data in an
international open standard format and can also read and write files from other
common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely
free of charge for any purpose. For me, it is a dream come true
since I had been wanting to get rid of my pirated copy of MS Office XP
installed in my system.
After over a week of testing OpenOffice.org , I decided to let go of my illegal copy of MS Office. I felt like I had unburden 50% of my guilt. No kidding.
Desktop Publishing Softwares
And why I was saying I only had unburden myself 50% of guilt is that because I'm still running illegal copies of CorelDRAW and Adobe Photoshop. So far, I haven't heard yet of an open-source desktop or graphics software. I remember I was using an OEM Ulead PhotoImpact a few years back but it died with my old system. It was also not that rigid and powerful as compared to these two heavy-duty graphics software I mentioned. Readers, if you know of an open-source software similar to these two desktop publishing softwares I mentioned here, please let me know. Drop me a line or you may leave your message at the Comment section. If I can come with a clean system, I mean, a system free of illegal software copies, I'll be very very happy. But if you prefer to donate to me licenses of these major software packages that I mentioned here, I'll be more than happy to appreciate it. Just let me know.
As stated in the opening of this article, this is not an advertisement post but an inspiration that I received while in a deep thought thinking about guilt-free computing. So, I'll share with you the links below of the free softwares that I had downloaded in the past. If it could help, I'll be very much happy.
- PageBreeze Free HTML Editor
4.0b
Note from the developer: PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is a powerful HTML editor which has both visual (WYSIWYG) and HTML tag modes. PageBreeze's design emphasizes simplicity and ease-of-use. You'll find that you'll be creating great looking Web sites almost instantly with virtually no learning curve. It offers the kind of power you would find in the leading commercial products. It's visual editor is actually powered by Microsoft Internet Explorer, so you can always be certain that you are seeing exactly what you will get when your Web site is uploaded to your server. PageBreeze HTML Editor includes a drag-and-drop form builder which makes it easy to build powerful Web forms and get them working almost instantly, without the need for programming or scripts. You can switch between HTML source and visual modes at any time with a click of the mouse. Version 4.0b may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

The HTML Editor Application can open most text-based files, and has support for compiling Java apps with a Java compiler.

La Mesa Eco Park: a Photo Essay
Saturday, March 22, 2008
Canon EOS 300D / Shutter Speed: 1/10 sec / F-stop: f/4.0 / ISO Setting: 400 /
focal length: 27mm /flash: off / mount: handheld (March. 20, 2008)
Dearest MIP friends and brothers and sisters all across the globe:
Kumusta na? It's been awhile that I didn't get in touch with all of you. I apologize. I had been a bit busy these few months that passed that I had very limited time with my "Internet life." I hardly surf, so the chance to socialize online is far fetched. I also didn't do street photography after I lost my phone to thieves last December. So, I naturally ran out of photographs. I don't bring my Canon SLR everyday.
However, this Holy Week gave me another chance to go out and shoot. The two days break from work (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday) gave me an opportunity to unite with Jovy for another wanderlust. While the two-day company outing to Laguna Hot Spring is so enticing, I chose to stay behind so I could create a more personalized adventure for me and Jovy. Besides, the night before the outing, I learned that traffic going outside Manila, both northbound and southbound, was so heavy. I knew by experience that it is a battle with traffic going to and from Laguna Hot Spring for this kind of season. Our Toyota Revo was used for the outing as it provides more seating capacity so I was very unfortunate to have left with the FJ Cruiser.
In the morning of Thursday, I drove to Jovy's boarding house. We hadn't agreed earlier for any place we would have to go, but I brought with me my SLR camera in anticipation. I also brought with me my laptop and a few DVD so just in case the ladies would just decide to stay home, I can just work out for my deadlines or just spend the day watching movies with the ladies. Along with Jovy in the boarding house is her younger sister Malou and a boardmate Grace, a Bicolana beauty. The rest of the boarders were in vacation, and some was still reporting to work (nurses, policewomen, etc).
The ladies wanted a trip outside Metro Manila. I reasoned that traffic congestion would be at hand once we would already be on our way back to Manila. While it could be true, the real reason I declined is that we won't be having enough gas for a long trip. Finally, after lunch, we settled for a two hundred pesos worth of gas at Petron station in Main Avenue in Cubao. It should be enough going to La Mesa Eco Park and back to the boarding house.
We arrived at La Mesa Eco Park already late in the afternoon. There were lots of park-goers, too. We started the photography rampage right away. There are lots activities you can think of when in the park. The ladies were eating ice cream. For 100 pesos, they rode and paddled a boat good for thirty minutes. For a fifty pesos entrance fee per person, we were able to visit the orchidarium, climbed up the stairs to take a glimpse of the La Mesa Dam, and go swimming at the pool if we want it to. However, the swimming pool was already closed when we arrived as it already reached the maximum capacity of swimmers allowed. We didn't plan to go swimming, though.
For a separate entrance fee of 30 pesos per head, one can observe how butterfly lay their eggs at the Butterfly Trail. Unfortunately, it was already past 5pm when we arrived and the trail was already closed for visitors.
I noticed there were lots of improvements in the park as compared to the first time I visited the place. Also, what used to be a public road that squirm beside La Mesa Dam is already a restricted area. More than two years ago, I was able to go over La Mesa Dam taking photos using my film SLR. Extreme sports are becoming to be popular now in the park.
It was already dark when we left La Mesa Eco Park. The seemingly inexhaustible ladies were already tired and thirsty. We craved for halo-halo and tried to find one along Commonwealth Avenue but unsuccessful. We proceed to Razon's Halo-halo in Araneta Center and found it to be closed. It was of course, Maundy Thursday, and most shop are closed for business. Anyhow, we ended our adventure for the day with halo-halo in Chowking along Tuazon Street in Cubao.
Good Friday was a lazy day. When I get to visit to Jovy's boarding house again, the ladies didn't want to go out for another wanderlust. While there maybe a lot of destinations just around Metro Manila, like the Manila Baywalk, the Quezon City Circle, and many others, the ladies just decided to stay home to avoid the stress of crowded parks. Food trip was being agreed instead. The three just decided to eat, sleep, and watch TV. So, while I was left alone at the receiving area downstair and the ladies were watching their favorite TV programs in their room upstair, I was having a good DVD marathon: i.e. Under Siege (Steven Seagal), The Gods Must Be Crazy II, and Passion of Christ (by Mel Gibson). In between of the activity, we were eating sumptuous food prepared by Grace, a born cook who hails from the Bicol region. Later in the afternoon, we went to the nearest 7 Eleven to buy a gallon of ice cream. It was a feast instead of a fast.
Black Saturday is for resizing of photos and posting online. And that's what can be found in the second half of this page. There are 9 megabytes of resized photos below the dotted line (hosted at Multiply) that will take time to download. Please be patient during the download process...
