Whatever Happens To My Favorite FM Station?
Sunday, November 2, 2008
I'd been an avid listener of 96.3 WRock since I arrived in Manila in 1995 and this FM radio station has been my road companion ever since. In the advent of live streaming, I had been listening to this radio station whenever I get online (http://hayag.com/wrock).
On October 6, 2008, it has been announced that the Elizalde Group of Companies' Manila Broadcasting Company has purchased WRocK from the Hodreal family, owners of ACWS-UBN, for PhP229.6 million (link here). Except for the acquisition price, further terms were not disclosed.
What followed next is the obvious reprogramming of the unique WRock format. Favorite jocks and favorite segments can no longer be heard. Is WRock soon to follow suite with 90.7 Love Radio and Yes!FM programming? The latter two are also currently owned by MBC.
It's too early to speculate for anything but it's far from my better judgment that WRock will start to air the tag line, Pastilan dude. Automatic Yan! YES FM, or the nonsensical and unrealistic lines like the following:
Or will it be airing 90.7 Love Radio's tag line, Kailangan pa bang i-memorize 'yan? Bisyo na 'to!. Is it now time for WRock to settle down to cheap jokes, senseless banter, and absurd and green jock names 90.7 Love Radio is known for?
Maybe I'm just too sentimental. Yet, I can only hope the change could be for the better. Abangan...

Wow, that's a lot of money. I didn't have a lot of time to listen to the radio and my friends preferred playing their CDs in their car, but when my wife was in Manila, we used to listen to AM radio's Dr Love. :-)
I am quite familiar with WRock's format and it is indeed very different from the ones that are following a certain trend... I do hope they can retain the unique WRock flavor. -

PhP229.6 million that is a lot of money...and then destroy WRock's uniqueness? -

@ marex: I'm still listening WRock when I'm on the road. In the office, Wrock's online streaming had already been stopped, I'm still tuning WRock using the radio in my phone. Maybe I'll try Energy FM.
@ aCey: Thousand of Wrock avid fans and listeners are quite disappointed for the change :( -

This is the problem when someone takes over a radio station we love. They change it all. I used to listen to 96.3 myself when I was still in Manila. I hope nothing drastic, or cheap, happens to it.
