An Unfortunate Incident II
Monday, December 24, 2007

If you've read the earlier post of this blog, you should have learned the reason I started a blog is so I can relinquish my anger over a stolen cellphone when I was in Dagupan. I'm afraid I'm going to blog the same thing the second time around.
Yesterday, December 23, at six in the evening, my girlfriend and I met in SM Megamall to prepare some things we would bring to a family friend in Cubao. A small family party is going to be had. We went to Goldilocks located at the third floor to buy a cake. From there, we proceed to bus stop for a ride going to Cubao. We purposely took the non-aircon bus so we could arrive quickly in our destination. Not only that non-aircon buses move faster than aircon buses, but non-aircon buses would also take the Ortigas flyover while aircon buses would pass by "Ortigas ilalim" causing delay to passengers in hurry (especially for the Christmas rush).
Onboard the bus, my girlfriend was seated at the window side, I was in the middle, and a fellow commuter near the aisle. Just as I always did when taking public transport such as jeepneys or buses, I locked my cellphone tucked in my waist with my right elbow. Just as I was about to pay for our fare, a man suddenly emerged from behind to distract our attention by pointing and asked me and my girlfriend to pick up something beneath us. In a split of second, I realized we're going to be the next victim of Laglag-barya gang. Laglag-barya gang's modus operandi is usually to put a coin down below and asked the favor of their prey to pick it up for them. Just as the unsuspecting victim obliged, they would right away strip him/her off of his/her valuable items. My realization was already way too late. In that split of second that I was distracted and my elbow was slightly opened in my right side, another man who was quicker than a dragster would shift gear got hold of my cellphone, stand up, and started to climb down from the moving bus. The scene was spontaneous. My girlfriend who noticed what had happened started to shout. I was also shouting at the snatcher, the one who got my cellphone. I thought of grabbing him but the accomplice who earlier had distracted our attention blocked my way. Two younger men stopped the bus and four of them simultaneously disembarked. My girlfriend Jovy shouted at me to run after those who took my cellphone away. Another guy shouted, "'Wag mo 'nang sundan. May panaksak 'yon," telling me those guys have bladed weapons. Another guy who I noticed is wearing almost the same branded polo and shoes that I got, asked me what had happened. They turned out to be accomplice. All six of them alighted from the bus.
You might ask how I reacted during the situation. At first, I thought of jumping and get over to the perpetrator who had my cellphone before they could climb down from the bus. But then in a flash, I realized it's not worth to be risking my life with cellphone only. I would only endanger myself but for sure will not get my cellphone back as there are "four" of them. (Initially, I thought there were only four of them before fellow passengers told me that the one who advised me about bladed weapon and the other one who briefly spoke with me are also collaborator to the crime.) Flashback went as far as remembering fellow photography enthusiast and seasoned mountaineer JL Bernardo (his spirit already at peace in heaven) who also lost his life due to phone theft.* I also realized if something horrific will happen to me at that instance, it will be known to people who should not know my relationship with Jovy that we're together. Basically, horizontal relationship are not allowed in the company we're working with. And the thought that if I'd be fatally harmed by those culprit, leaving my girlfriend behind in this physically world would be too unbearable to me. Right then and there, I didn't move further and just let go of those thieves.
Jovy, whom only at that time I found out to be strong, and apparently didn't foresee the ensuing danger, told me to run after those thieves. Well, I didn't move and when those six petty criminals were already out of sight and the bus started to move forward again, another fellow passenger told her, "Misis, pinapasundan mo pa sa asawa mo eh mas lalong mapanganib yon." That's only the time she realized how dangerous the situation was and she was grateful at that time I was still alive. "Cellphone lang 'yon," added the fellow passenger. She's right.
The right thing I did was to call up Sun Cellular hotline for the immediate blocking of my SIM. The loss is very very frustrating (and I just replaced another 2GB memory stick two weeks ago) but we still manage to arrive to the small family party and enjoy. I talked to them about what had happened (and my phone was supposed to be used to take pictures for the party) and I was told life is still vital over all material things. I was very much comforted.
Unlike the first incident of losing my cellphone where I was in a state of shock in a period of time, this time I wasn't. But I can't just believe myself such thing can happen to me again the second time around. While working in Antipolo, I traversed the treacherous Sumulong Highway during night time from Cubao to Antipolo but didn't encounter incident like that while robbery was so rampant then. I had been to Divisoria and witnessed a lot of similar incident that had happened to other people but such thing didn't occur to me. I survived Baclaran unscathed but was finally shamed down by a no-brainer thing carried out by small-time criminals in a short travel from SM Megamall to Cubao.
Sometime today, I'll go to Sun Cellular business center in SM North EDSA after publishing this post to get SIM replacement. While replacement charges only costs P150, getting another cellphone is not simple considering the line up of priorities. It will take a while before I'll get another handset.
That's my phone in the photo above - a Sony Ericsson K750i that I bought purposely for street photography and so I'd always have an accompanying camera wherever I go. SLR is too bulky to bring for daily snapshots. My mobile phone camera is gone but I still live (thanks God). If you want to read a story of the same title as this article, you may click here.
Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all of my readers out there...

A Handwritten Post

Canon 300D / Shutter Speed: 1/15 sec / F-stop: f/5.6 / ISO Setting:
800 / focal length: 49mm /flash: off / mount: handheld
Good thing memes have no deadlines otherwise I must have been penalized because of this long overdue post. I was tagged by magandang pusa to do a handwritten post about 3 things I'm addicted to. While I won't directly admit I'm addicted to anything, I should say there are 3 things I can't live without. And these are the three things I'm going to blog about here.
-
Camera - I love travelphotography so I invested a small amount for my photography equipment. I used a film Canon SLR for 17 years before I finally switched to digital. My photography equipment has gotten bigger in time that I can't just carry it to places without the aid of private vehicle. I realized I need a small and compact camera to be used for those daily snapshots. So I resorted to buying a Sony Ericsson K750i. It's a mobile phone and a 2.0 megapixel camera in one - quite practical for my shooting style. Unfortunately, my phonecam was just stolen last night so I may never get to daily photography from now on.
-
Computer - Anybody who is reading this blog entry right now may not need to be explained why I can't live without computers. But if you would like to know what are the specific functions I used in a computer, here it goes: I use computer to connect to the internet so I can surf the web, connect to friends, send email, post blog entries, and any other online activities. I also use computer for resizing my travel photos, desktop publishing works, web developing and the likes. For personal entertainment, I use computer to listen to music, watch movies, convert media, etc. In fact, I rented a few title of action movies as early as this morning for my DVD marathon tonight. As I'm living alone in Manila with no family to spend Christmas Eve with, I'll just secure an ample amount of food and will watch movies to my hearts content. By the way, I still have work tomorrow - December 25. So might as well will save a few minutes of sleep for that.
-
Motorcycle - Motorcycles can really do most of our trips as well as or even faster than cars. If we calculate the cost of the fuel and time we spend doing small errands on daily basis, it is easier to conclude that motorcycles are cheaper, convenient, reliable and faster than cars. Motorcycles require less space to store or park and can pass through between two parallel cars during traffic jams. Motorcycle is my best option for cars, buses or train ride and even for those long distance, provincial rides. Not only that it moves fast especially during heavy traffic, it is also fuel efficient as compared to a regular sedan.
How I Created This Blog Entry
Handwritten thing (or this meme) is one that needs creativity. I was losing my creative edge (and probably the other reason is that I lost my phone last night to thieves) but I felt like I need to go over this tag before I'd proceed to another blog entry. So, early in the morning while cooking for my breakfast, I write the meme in the Notepad feature of my PDA. placed it on top of the table, fired a few shots of it using my Digital Rebel in different camera settings, and that photo above turned out a little bit better as compared to other shots. Do you think this qualifies?

Links and Stats
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Linkage had been growing so big in years that I opt to place it in a separate page from its original location in my sidebar. If you want your site to be listed here, please drop me a line or you may leave your comment below. Thank you very much.
Update as of March 5, 2008: I started to move all of my sidebar widgets to a single page as part of my decluttering program and website redesign. Since I can't afford to create a few additional static page, I finally decided that those stuff removed from the sidebar be replaced in this link page. Thus the title is renamed as Links, Traffic, Badges... The original location for this page is this link: http://travelogue.digitalrebel.ws/2007/12/links.html

Hot-Linking Images at Multiply
Wednesday, December 12, 2007
I had been using Multiply for a year now because of its simply excellent capability of handling photo management online. While I must admit it is an excellent web management solutions, I prefer running my blog with my own domain and webhosting services and use Blogger as my weblog tool. Since I am up to saving more webspace for my site and reducing monthly bandwidth usage, I decided to have my photos hosted to free photo hosting site. Flickr was a good candidate, but later I ran out of space because I was only availing the free account. I tried Imageshack but the way photos are resized and compressed, it didn't appear that appealing to me. I also found out lately that Ringo and Friendster also are now supporting hotlinking of images but the compression ratio applied to images being uploaded to their photo gallery service are way too much. Multiply was still the best until later.
A few days ago, I was receiving two comments
of guests in my site telling me that they are
seeing Multiply logos instead of my photos. I checked my website using my own
laptop and didn't notice any irregularities. Yesterday, I was receiving emails
from friends abroad stating the same problem at an alarming level. Something
must be wrong with Multiply.
Then, I realized my Multiply username and password is automatically saved into my Firefox browser. Photos might have been cached as well. That prompt me with an idea to check my website from other terminal. To my horror, I saw it myself what my site visitors are telling me. I was seeing Multiply logos instead of the photographs embedded into every page of my site. As far as I know, Multiply's policy allow hotlinking of images shared as "public." I checked my photo restriction in Multiply and found all permissions are set to ''public. '' What the heck!
Most of my travel adventure photos are hosted at Multiply and I am at its mercy in hotlinking those photos to every blog entry that I write. Most of my postings since last year relied on Multiply's photo hosting.
Meanwhile, I am temporarily hosting my photos at Freeimagehosting.net. To those visitors who won't be able to view images from my site (as illustrated above), I found an awkward solution on how to view the images that are supposed to be displayed in the webpages here:
- Firefox user: Right-click the Multiply logo that appear and from the context menu, click "View Image." If the browser will display the same Multiply logo instead of my photo, you may click the Reload button above. The browser will then display the photo.
- IE user: There's no way for you to view the photos by right-clicking the Multiply logo. But if a link to a higher resolution photo is provided, that should work. All images embedded in the webpages that are hosted by Multiply are shared as "Public."
This is for now. I'll be solving this dilemma one at a time. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I Survived Baclaran Unscathed
Tuesday, December 11, 2007
I could have posted this a few days earlier before the MIP X'mas Party 2007 but was caught with the event while in the middle of editing the draft. Now, here it goes...
On December 1, a Sunday, my girlfriend Jovy asked me to go to Baclaran to buy reducing capsule. No, she's not the one using it. A friend of hers asked the favor to buy it for her. And since Jovy had to report to work, she passed on the burden to me, knowing I don't have much thing to do in a Sunday (and knowing I cannot say "No" to her).
After my laundry in the morning, I prepared myself to go to Baclaran. I had to take public transport so I won't be in trouble looking for a good place to park the car. I just rode a non-aircon bus from Boni Avenue since it was Sunday and the vehicular traffic in EDSA was fast-moving anyway. Besides, I didn't want to go to the hassle of looking for the right place to park. Since I arrived Manila in 1995, that was only the second time I had to visit the place, of which the first was in the year 2000.
When I arrived Taft Avenue, I get off from the bus and cross to the Baclaran-side of EDSA by climbing up the MRT Taft Avenue Station. There were lots of commuter as I could see, so I didn't have any regret taking the bus instead of the train.
When I was already in the Baclaran side of EDSA, I noticed there were three shabby-looking men who started to trail me behind. I noticed them yet I was just playing dumb. I was already a bit suspicious though. A small pathway I was treading with is overcrowded with a lot of people. One of the three guys who were following me moved ahead and after a few steps stopped in front of me to intentionally block my way. The pedestrian traffic was moving forward slowly so by any means there should be no reason that guy should stop walking without any hostile intention towards me. I sensed something must be wrong. The other guy was quicked enough to block me in the left side. To my right is a stall full of merchandise. That was it! I knew I was being trapped. I thought of backing off but the third one was quick enough to press me from behind. I secured my cellphone right away which was tucked into the left side of my waist. But the guy from behind was already pulling my wallet inside my pocket. I had to quickly get a hold of it too. It all happened so quickly that I didn't have enough time to look at their faces. In a split of second, I rammed the blockade and quickly moved forward to avoid any losses. I didn't dare looking back but I sensed the three were moving forward after me. With only a few inches gap, I can feel it. The pedestrian traffic in that pathway moved very slow. I jumped into the road where car and people mixed - where there is enough room for me to move easily. I walked and walked faster without looking back. I suddenly felt tired out of frustration. Not that I was afraid, but it's because I couldn't see any policeman around. And to think that I was so helpless being attempted to be robbed off in my full knowledge but still couldn't do anything about it because even if I'd shout, nobody would dare stepping in to help me out. My Martial Arts instinct automatically told me not to confront my aggressors but to run away instead. It's safer that way than provoking a fight. Damn that 500 pesos worth of reducing capsule!
A girl in the mid-twenties was criss-crossing my path, gone behind and attempted to pull out my wallet. But with my watchful spirit already wide awaken in the first incident, she was insignificant.
I walked like walking a hundred meters and saw a Tropical Hut diner. I get inside so quickly and dial my girlfriend's phone. I told her what had happened. She told me just to go back if that was the case. But I was already in the area so I was compromised. Based on the direction my girlfriend gave me earlier, I already had passed by the shop where I could buy the reducing capsule. It was just supposedly under the last LRT station.
I tried to find similar shop near Tropical Hut and found one Chinese drug store selling the same brand of reducing capsule but of different packaging. I called up my girlfriend about it but she told me I should go find exactly the same packaging as her friend wanted. That means I have to brave back for that treacherous ground portion of the LRT station. I squeezed myself through hundreds on people until I could reach back to the train station. But I couldn't find the shop. I called up again and told my girlfriend about my not finding the shop which is supposedly there. She told me to wait for her next call and she cut the line. I waited for what it seemed to be forever. I stayed in one corner and was glad to have spotted a security guard nearby. I also took notice of the eateries and shops to be owned by Muslim brothers. The place must be a Muslim traders area. What a sigh of relief. I felt safer here.
My girlfriend called up again. She told me that had I taken the train, I could see the shop when I get down in the stairways. Assuming the scenario, I supposed I was in the wrong side of the road. I told my girlfriend the new direction contradicted the former one. She told me that's what her friend told her. Based on the new direction, I crossed the street braving myself in the midst of throng of people. I was very mindful of all the people around me. By that time, I already kept my phone secure in my front pocket. My wallet is still in the back but was watched very carefully.
I
found the shop and asked about the reducing capsule. They had two kinds of
packaging for the brand but neither was the exact packaging I was looking for.
Again, I called up my girlfriend and told her the stock in a specific packaging
we're looking for is not available. She told me her friend told her it should be
at the second booth. I checked the next booth and found out that their products
are cellphone accessories. I roamed around and had seen that goods for sale
there are cellphone accessories and apparels. There was no such thing as a booth
selling some reducing capsules aside from that shop at the entrance. I was
very pissed up by the situation. Women are known to be very poor in giving
direction - my girlfriend and her friend proved it right.
Since I couldn't find what I was looking for, I was asking people at random where the Chinese drug stores in Baclaran located. All of them pointed me to the same direction - back of Baclaran church. At that time, I didn't call my girlfriend. If I can find the stock exactly the same as the one they're looking for, that's the time I'd call up. On my way going to the direction of the Chinese drug stores, I took out my cellphone and took a couple of shots to lots of shoppers swarming around the place. After a few shots, I put my cellphone back into my front pocket.
I
was very happy to see signages with Chinese characters in it. I bet those are
the Chinese drug stores already. I was right. The Chinese drug stores are just
located across McDonald's. I entered the second drug store and right away asked
about the reducing capsule I am looking for. The sales clerk showed me their
stock but it was not the packaging I was looking for. She showed me two more,
and there was none. The fourth one she showed me is finally the right one I
was trying to find. I didn't realize for that particular brand of reducing capsule
that it is composed of four packaging. The price was a bit
higher as compared to the money sent for me to buy those products. I haggled for
the price and made it to the budget given to me. I called up my girlfriend and
told her I had already bought exactly the same stock as instructed. I didn't
find it at the place her friend told her about. I got it from a different place
but at exactly the same price. She's very thankful and asked me to go to her
right away. She promised she prepared some snacks for me. That was just timely.
I dehydrated during those two tumultuous hours into which it was as if I was
looking for a piece of needle in a pile of hay. My girlfriend reminded me to
take care always before signing off.
While inside the Chinese drug store, I took a few snapshots of the crowd of
shoppers outside. It is that photo into which McDonald's is clearly seen. I also
intend not to go back into the same way I was coming from lest I would encounter
those thugs again. I chose heading to Baclaran church instead. Not that it is
nearer, but infront of the church is already a bus stop for northbound
destination.
I thought of taking a quick look inside the church but was restrained with hundreds of people coming in and out. So I chose to stay outside and took a photo of the side of the building structure. From there, I slowly moved forward until I reached the bus stop. I took the first non-aircon bus in the line and made myself comfortable. I felt like I was relieved from a war zone unharmed.
Last Week's Activity

For some reason, my 2GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo acted up and crashed before I
knew it. No software recovery could revive it. It was priced at Php6950xx in
Entry Data Point in SM Megamall when I bought it two years ago. The warranty was
over so the possibility to claim for damaged item is less likely. As a
photography enthusiast, it is a hard thing for me to live without such thing.
While I can't simply carry my bulky SLR around, I always found my mobile phone
camera to be very handy in time of needs. So I was compelled to look for
replacement. My girlfriend offer to buy such for me. She understood I am tight
in budget. She went to Columbia in SM Megamall Bldg. A but came back later
complaining that this proprietary memory stick from Sony is still pricey at
Php3950xx. Well, she didn't buy. I went to Cyberzone and found this 2GB Sony
Memory Stick Pro Duo at Topwin Telecom for only Php1350xx. Since I didn't bring
cash (and there was no cash at all), I charged the payment to my Mastercard. Got
the memory stick and went down happily. Got a scolding from my girlfriend for
using my credit card into purchasing the item. Never mind the scolding - I felt
fulfilled at that time...

A pedometer I bought for only Php88xx at the Japanese shop in EDSA Central Mall
last December 1. From now on, I can start counting for my steps. This is one of
the actions I started to take as a means of losing weight. Got the tip from
Watson. Thanx,
Nick!

Got this collared Tee as an early birthday present from my girlfriend. This is
what I was wearing during the
MIP
X'mas Party.

new 2GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. But look who's posing in front of my phonecam?
Last Night's Activity

Last night, I was reunited for a few minutes with a few friends at the
Manila Hotel. Toto, the guy to the left, is already based in the USA. Jovy,
third from left, is already a successful bird's nest entrepreneur running his
own business. Ian, the last one, is also US-based and already happily married
with a Thai, and is expecting for their first baby very soon. That's me, second
from the left, is as poor as a rat. By the way, it was my phonecam being used to
capture this moment. A self-timer is being used.

The MIP Christmas Party 2007
Sunday, December 9, 2007
My Islands
Philippines
I had been so busy
lately because of an upcoming event to be held next week at the Quirino
Grandstand in Manila. Two days before
the event, I didn't have much time to get online. I didn't check the MIP
forum and didn't have any idea as to the latest update of the planned
Christmas Party. So the ever gracious and sympathetic Ms. Jen texted me
the details in the last minute:
Venue: Ilustrado
Time: 6:00pm
Attire: Casual
Activities: Games, Party, Exchange Gifts
Originally, there should be a photoshoot before the party would start
but since the schedule was moved to a Friday and everyone is going to be
busy from work, photoshoot was left out from the plan.
I brought my girlfriend for the party. We arrived at the venue a few minutes late but found out only Sir Rey arrived ahead of us. I saw his Revo at the parking area when we get inside the restaurant. Sir Rey or Rey Nocum is MIP's macro master. We climbed upstair and found the venue to be empty - even Sir Rey who already arrived ahead of us is yet nowhere to be found. I realized MIPers were just on their way. Moments later, Sir Rey, Ms. Jen, and Denz Dayao arrived. Ms. Jen came with boyfriend Aldwin in tow. Denz came with better half Ling and officemate Roy. Only Sir Rey was ''single" at the moment. We gathered ourselves while waiting for the food. The group's secretary, Ms. Jen, started her report. She announced that a special guest would arrive soon. She also announced that Rubbersoul couldn't come anymore due to work-related circumstances. I was disappointed when I heard such. Not only because the party was scheduled on a Friday in his favor, but because I would want to meet once again one of Cebu's veteran in film photography who just recently turn digital. A wise man where you can learn things from him every now and then - Rubbersoul of MIP.
Master blogger and seasoned storyteller Dennis Villegas a.k.a. Pareng Dennis texted that he could no longer arrive due to heavy traffic. His namesake Denz playfully remarked, "We need his blogging skills. Sabihin mo ke tukayo mawala man siya basta ang blog (niya) hindi." Needless to say, Pareng Dennis didn't show up. He just texted me to extend his best regards to everyone in the party.
Doc Gerry texted me that he couldn't come as well. Ms. Jen said Doc Gerry had prior commitment for an scheduled surgery. With that, Sir Rey jokingly said, "Dapat dinala na lang niya pasyente niya dito." Somebody added, "Libre pa documentation."
MJ couldn't come. He had that stated earlier. He's out of the country since November according to Ms. Jen.
Initially, there were eight of us: Sir Rey, Jen and boyfriend Aldwin, Denz and wife Ling, Roy, me and my girlfriend Jovy. Even when the food was already being served, we were still counting for more MIPers to come. Later, Ms. Jen informed us that couples Paolo and Joy won't arrive anymore. So, there was only one person left who is sure to come, being referred to by Ms. Jen as "special guest." Meanwhile, as photography enthusiasts would have it, boys talked cameras. I think girls talked about girly things (Hehehe).
The special guest turn out to be Grace from Dubai. She arrived just in time when the party had already started. She was tagging Ador behind. Ador is also an active MIPer during those times he was employed in Dubai. Overall, there were 10 members of MIP present at the affair.
Parlor games like breaking the egg and "Polygon" highlighted the event. Everybody was having fun. My girlfriend was very much amused with the comical Denz. She didn't expect the MIP Christmas Party can be that happier and fun. During the games, Jovy is my game partner and we hadn't win anything.
After the exchanging of gifts, Grace handed to each and everyone of us souvenirs from Saudi Arabia. Later when I was home, I found out it is a picture frame with picture of the desert with eight different colors of desert sand neatly piled in the frame. It's a cool souvenir.
The party finished at past 10pm. Did we have a blast at that night! Yet, personally, I thought, the more MIPer came, the more it should be fun.
For the transportation back home, Sir Rey gave us a lift. There were four of us whom he dropped in Cubao; Grace, Ador, Jovy and me. Kuya Rey, thanx for the ride :)
This is my
unadorned and boring report about the MIP Christmas Party
2007 held last Friday, December 7.
Jhun Vibar, Albert, Ms. Belle and those who were not able to make it for this year's MIP gathering in Intramuros, I hope we'll make it next year. We can also hope the affair is a trendsetter for a regular annual gathering of all MIP members all across the globe.

Recollection
Saturday, December 1, 2007
I wish I could have posted real travel adventures. But after my Iloilo trip, I am stalled and tied up to several works that hindered me immobile. Anyhow, I make use of my time for food trips and going places just adjacent to my work area.
After our visit in Dampa sa Farmers Market on October 28, we opt for another food trip at the Cafe & Deli in Gateway Mall, Araneta Center last November 2, a Friday. Cafe & Deli, operated by Mandarin Hotel is that garden cafe very well landscaped in the middle of Gateway Mall, accessible at Level 1.
Actually, the day is not ordinary for us. For while we could have celebrated our first year anniversary last September 28, we were not able to make it because I was on my Iloilo vacation and she was in her Cotabato vacation. My girlfriend and I agreed to have the celebration coincide with the date of our first going out. Our first date was on November 5, 2006 where we went aboard baywalk cruise. And since for this year, the day fell on a Monday, we decided to reminisce our first date in the weekend. The first thing that came to our mind is the Cafe & Deli at Gateway Mall. If you want to know why, please see the photos below.

We were billed 2,000 pesos plus for the food that we ordered. Yet, that's not the thing. Considering the place is private and solemn, an ideal place for lovers who would want to call the day significant, who wouldn't want to come into this place?
Luneta
As already stated above, November 5 is exactly one year after we embarked the Tennessee Cruise at Manila Baywalk. Jovy and the sentimentalist in her, wanted to visit Baywalk though I told her that Baywalk is no longer the animated place she is reliving in her memories. So, on November 4, a Sunday off we go.
The place met us head-on with a very reproaching spirit. It is no longer the lively place promenaders and party animals alike used to visit. Just a year or so, it was a place full of vivid lights combined with incongruous mixture of loud music frequented by motley throng of foreign and locals visitors. In this visit that we had, we found the place to be barren and lifeless, with a few families roaming around the place. A few cyclists were also there trying (and hoping) to breath some fresh air from the sea. There were beggars and bums moving around without clear direction. The sparkling shops are no longer to be seen. The cruise was nowhere to be found. Another important thing to note, there is no longer any police visible on site so as to intimidate petty criminals. I remember during the time of Lito Atienza, police in uniform can be seen patroling around the vicinity. We found the place unsafe and no longer conducive for our dating that afternoon. Instead of being inspired, we left the place with drained spirits.
Moving to a place we are not sure of, we ended up at the Rizal Park, formerly called Luneta. At first, we just stayed in one corner so we could talk. But then, an army of fundraisers would alternately approach us for their solicitations. For the first few fundraisers who introduced themselves as missionary, my girlfriend gave her donation. But then, a lot more were coming in we were already more than annoyed. Our privacy is totally being invaded by their frequent approach, so we decided to just move around. Luneta is a public park, so I couldn't complain.

If you happened to read my entry entitled
Joyride, I
would like you to know that it is in this Seafarer's Center that I spend the
night with for not having any place to sleep. I pointed to my girlfriend the
exact place where
I positioned myself to sleep during those times.

When it was getting dark, we decided to find a place for our dinner. We were
both tired and hungry. We settled in Jollibee - Kalaw. For our order, we had
Chicken Joy and Palabok. If in Cafe & Deli, we spend 2000 pesos, here, we only
paid 200 pesos. Isn't it cheap for a date?
Next food trip was last November 23, a Friday at Gerry's Grill in Promenade, Greenhills.
