Low Waist Jeans: Pro's and Con's
Friday, September 3, 2004
Metro Manila, the metropolitan capital of the Philippines, is home to some 10 million people. A light metro system (Mass Rail Transit - MRT), which runs mostly elevated, is serving to its daily commuters.
It is very likely, that if your one of these commuter, you certainly would meet different kind of people, of course, not necessarily from all walks of life, but middle-class citizens who are just doing their daily routine. Oftentimes, you can also see aristocratic personalities getting in and out of the train. Whatever it is, there is only one thing common about these daily commuters. They go to work. From the North, people go to the commercial district in Ortigas, though most people are working in Makati. This is very certain, with the fact that during rush hour in the morning, heavily-loaded south-bound MRT cars are almost emptied after its stop at Ayala MRT station. This goes to show that more or less 70% of our daily commuters are employed and are working in Makati, and are earning that good.
It is from these daily

commuters that you will know
what's in and what's out about fashion. If you're keen enough, you will observe
these daily commuters are the unsung trendsetters. And, so what? They have their
job, and they're earning.
To some, life of a daily commuter is a dull and boring daily routine, unless you delve into something extraordinary. For my friend, Robert Go, escaping from boredom is capturing anything that goes his way while in transit. Yes, this guy is making a photographic documentation in his commuting routine. With the advent of today's mobile phone camera, he can take photos with anything he likes in discreet manner. This is how he is able to compile photos of women wearing low waist jeans.
My friend Robert keep sharing these images to me.
This somehow interests me, but for ethical reason, I can't just find a space for
all of these images into my site, otherwise my site will be branded as
"blasphemous" site or of some sort. I know you see already the pictures before
reading this article, and you would say it by yourself, "These photos are just
real sexy and outrageous."

Anyway, while skimming on a magazine waiting for my turn at Kuwait Airways ticketing office in Legaspi Street, I came across an article that tackles about the advantages and disadvantages of wearing a low-waist jeans. The article didn't mention anything about its ethical issues but more about health concerns. Based on this, I thought I could write something about it also, with emphasis based on the photographs my friend were taken during his daily commuting. In this article, I will not be talking about the MRT or mobile phone cameras, but, I will talk about low waist jeans. Yes, low waist jeans.
Low waist jeans have been a hot item for many
years, especially in combination with tight, and no-waistband made this item one
of the best selling products, after the standard 5 pocket jean. Many people
still seem to think that low waist jeans are some sort of fetish jeans, but what
is considered to be sexy jeans in Brazil, could very well be seen as a fetish
jean in some rather puritan countries like, for instance China. Even though a
lot of the sexy fashion jeans originate from the same country, a low waist pant
with a 2 inch zipper will never be worn by regular Chinese people. "Why would
anyone want to show so much flesh or, even worse: tattoo's?" is a sentence that
can be heard in a lot of Chinese communities.
On the street, and particularly, in MRT, where most of these photos were taken,
we see a different mentality. Whereas most of the western kids seem to prefer
jeans styles that cover more of their teenage bodies, we see here that some
jeans factories are now producing very low "waisted" tight jeans in combination
with matching sexy denim tops (e.g. Lee Pipes), bustiers or even bra's. These
denim garments are not unlike what is considered to be club wear in most
European parties

and clubs. The denim lingerie they usually display there,
hasn't really been accepted in Manila's club scene, but sexy mini-skirts, other
short denim stretch skirts and also stretch jeans seem to be making yet another
return.
Tight hip-hugging, thong showing, topless jeans, as worn by the likes of Britney Spears, Hilary Duff and Vina Morales, have also been the subject of a recent health warning.
A doctor once wrote a letter to the Canadian Medical Association Journal detailing the cases of three women who had developed a nerve condition similar to carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of regularly wearing too tight jeans pants.
Dr. Parma warned that hipster trousers can squeeze
a sensory nerve under the hip bone, causing a tingling, burning

sensation called paresthesia. In a statement unlikely to endear himself to fashion-conscious
females, he said "low-rise" trousers were not suitable for "heavy women" and
suggested that women return to wearing traditional high-waisted jeans or
preferably loose dresses...
But it's not only the women that need education. Men, especially the ones that are considering fatherhood, will have to limit their wearing of tight jeans as well. That's because wearing tight pants can cause infertility and damage to the testicles. In the 16th century, Russian peasants actually used bearskin pants as a method of birth control.

MRT Line 3 runs above the most famous avenue in Metro Manila.
